VICTORIAN  PICNIC  RACING

NEWS  and  VIEWS (Continued)

May 9 2002 (Cont)

Winning riders at Colac were Craig Blackshaw, Robyn Orrlov, Kane Harris, Sean Cerchi, Brad McLean and Adam Bodey, but if there had been a rider of the day award, it would  surely have gone to Brad McLean. Having his first day as a picnic rider, Brad had five mounts and finished with a win, two seconds and a third. His winning ride in the 1600M Maiden earned him a Melbourne Cup reception, although I'm sure that a lot of the cheering was for the Leonard Maher trained winner Jarrah, who finally saluted at his 37th race start!

Although the 2001-2002 picnic racing season officially ended on Anzac Day, on Sunday 19th May the Melbourne Hunt Club's annual fixture will again include two Open Trophy races, run over 1200M and 1500M, complementing their four point to point races.

A huge crowd always rolls up to the Mornington racecourse on this day, and this year all records should be broken as the race meeting is combined with the Mornington Peninsula Country Life Festival.

Some of the Festival's many attractions include wine tastings, gun dog competitions, blacksmith demonstrations, train rides for the kids, a farmyard animal nursery, working sheep dogs, carriage driving races, the famous brewery Clydesdales, various bands and naturally plenty of picnic facilities.

There will also be a wide range of fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, cheese and other dairy products, on show and for sale. Other fantastic stalls will be selling giftware, craft items, country furniture, equestrian supplies, etc., etc., phone enquiries should be directed to (03) 9784 7792 (ask for a brochure).

And then there's the races, two Open Trophy races together with the four point to point events! Full details are of course in Inside Racing, but connections are reminded that there's $10,000 up for grabs and that entries close on Monday next at noon!

As we enter picnic racing's annual hibernation, make a note of this,
ALEXANDRA RACE ON DERBY DAY!
